1. Introduction
Welcome to Langu. Langu is an online platform through which students can find, book and take language lessons with independent language teachers around the world. The Langu platform is operated by E-Polyglot Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 08883623.
These terms apply when you access or use the Langu website, platform, messaging tools, virtual classroom, payment features or related services. By using Langu, you agree to these Student Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
2. Our role
Langu provides an online platform that helps students find, book and take lessons with independent teachers.
Teachers on Langu are independent providers of teaching services. They are not employed by Langu and are not our agents or representatives.
When you book a lesson with a teacher, the teaching services are provided by that teacher. Unless we expressly state otherwise, the contract for the provision of the lesson is between you and the teacher you choose.
Langu may manage or support parts of the booking process, including payment collection, payment holding, release of funds, refunds, credits, student protection, dispute handling, messaging, scheduling and other platform administration.
3. Eligibility and under-18s
You must be at least 18 years old to register for a Langu account.
If lessons are intended for a student under 18, the account must be registered and managed by that student’s parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian is responsible for the minor’s use of Langu, including all bookings, payments, communications and lesson participation.
By registering on behalf of a minor, you confirm that you are their parent or legal guardian and that you accept these terms on their behalf.
4. Account registration and security
When registering, you must provide accurate, truthful and up-to-date information.
You must use your real name and must not impersonate another person or create an account using false details.
You are responsible for keeping your account login details secure. You must not share your account access details with anyone else, except where a parent or guardian is managing an account for a minor.
You must notify us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.
5. Technical requirements
To use Langu effectively, you are responsible for ensuring that you have suitable equipment and internet access.
You will normally need:
- a stable internet connection;
- a laptop or desktop computer, or another compatible device;
- a webcam, microphone and speakers or headset;
- an up-to-date browser; and
- access to any software or tools reasonably required for the lesson.
We are not responsible for failed, interrupted or poor-quality lessons caused by your internet connection, equipment, browser, device settings or local technical issues.
6. Licence to use Langu
Subject to your compliance with these terms, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence to access and use Langu for your personal learning purposes.
You must not:
- use Langu in a way that damages, disrupts or impairs the platform;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, system or data;
- scrape, copy or misuse platform content or teacher information;
- use Langu for unlawful, abusive, fraudulent or harmful purposes;
- interfere with another user’s use of Langu; or
- attempt to bypass our payment, messaging, booking or platform rules.
We may withdraw, suspend or restrict your access to Langu if you breach these terms or if we reasonably believe your use of Langu creates risk for us, teachers, students or the platform.
7. Teachers
Teachers on Langu are independent service providers. They are not employees, workers, agents or representatives of Langu.
Teacher profiles, availability, qualifications, experience, prices and descriptions are provided by the teachers themselves. We may review, moderate or verify certain information, but we do not guarantee that all teacher profile information is complete, accurate or up to date.
You are responsible for choosing the teacher you wish to book.
8. Lessons, bookings and lesson packages
A “lesson” means a language lesson booked through Langu with a teacher.
A “trial lesson” means a free or paid introductory lesson booked through Langu.
A “lesson package” means a purchase of multiple lessons or lesson credits with a teacher.
The duration, price, availability and any minimum booking requirements for lessons are shown on the teacher’s profile or during the booking process.
Free and paid trial lessons are subject to these Student Terms unless we expressly state otherwise.
When you schedule a lesson with a teacher, we may share relevant information with that teacher, including your name, time zone, lesson booking history, number of trial lessons booked, number of paid lessons purchased, account registration date, and last login date. We share this information to help teachers manage bookings, assess student needs, prevent abuse, and provide lessons through the platform.
9. Payments
Payments on Langu are processed through Stripe and/or Stripe-supported payment methods.
By making a payment through Langu, you authorise us and our payment provider to process the payment for the relevant lesson, trial lesson, package or platform transaction.
The lesson fee is the amount you agree to pay for the relevant lesson, trial lesson or lesson package. Prices may be shown in supported currencies. If your bank, card provider or payment method applies currency conversion charges, foreign exchange fees or other charges, these are your responsibility.
We may deduct or receive a platform fee, commission or administrative fee from payments made through Langu, as agreed with teachers or as otherwise disclosed.
Payment processing, refunds, credits, chargebacks and payment disputes may be subject to checks, delays, deductions or requirements imposed by Stripe, card networks, banks, fraud-prevention systems or applicable law.
10. Payment holding, ratings and release of funds
After you make payment, the lesson fee may be held before being released to the teacher.
After a completed lesson, you may be asked to rate the teacher’s services on a scale from 1 to 5.
If you rate the lesson 3 or higher, the lesson fee will be released to the teacher and you will no longer be entitled to student protection for that lesson, except where your legal rights require otherwise.
If you rate the lesson 2 or lower, you may be eligible for student protection as described in section 15.
If you do not submit a rating within 24 hours after the lesson ends, the lesson fee may be released to the teacher automatically, unless you have raised a complaint or dispute before that time.
We may delay release of funds where we reasonably consider it necessary, including where there is a complaint, dispute, suspected fraud, payment issue, safeguarding concern, technical issue, chargeback risk or breach of these terms.
11. Rescheduling and cancellation by students
You may change or reschedule a lesson up to 24 hours before the originally scheduled lesson start time.
If you wish to cancel or reschedule a lesson within 24 hours of the originally scheduled lesson start time, this is at the teacher’s discretion.
If the teacher does not agree to the cancellation or rescheduling, or if you do not attend the lesson at the scheduled time, you may forfeit the lesson fee and the full payment for that lesson may be released to the teacher.
There is no separate one-hour cancellation window after booking.
The same cancellation and rescheduling rules apply to single lessons, paid trial lessons and lesson packages unless we expressly state otherwise.
Free trial lessons may also be subject to cancellation, rescheduling, no-show or fair-use rules. We may restrict access to further free trials where we reasonably believe the feature is being misused.
12. Refunds for unused lesson packages
Students may request a refund for the unused portion of a lesson package.
The refund amount will be proportionate to the number of unused lessons remaining in the package, minus a fee of 30% of the unused portion. This deduction includes:
- 15% for the teacher; and
- 15% administrative fee for Langu.
Refunds must be requested no later than 12 months after the date of purchase.
Lessons purchased as part of a package must be completed within 12 months of the date of purchase, after which unused lesson credits will expire.
13. Refunds where a teacher is unavailable
If you purchased a lesson package and the teacher is no longer available, or does not provide reasonable possible dates for the lessons to take place, you may request a refund for the unused portion of the package.
In these circumstances, the refund may take one of the following forms:
- a refund to the original payment method, minus a 5% administrative fee; or
- a full refund to Langu site credit, which can be used to book lessons with another teacher on Langu.
Langu site credit is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued. After that period, unused credit will expire.
14. Consumer cancellation rights
If you are a consumer purchasing lessons online, you may have legal cancellation rights under applicable consumer law, including a 14-day cancellation period for certain distance contracts.
Where these rights apply, the cancellation period usually begins on the day after the contract is made.
However, language lessons are scheduled services. If you book a lesson to take place during the 14-day cancellation period, you request that the service begins during that cancellation period.
If a lesson has already been fully provided, you will not normally be entitled to cancel that lesson or receive a refund for it.
If you cancel a lesson package during any applicable cancellation period, we may refund the unused portion, but we may deduct or withhold an amount for any lessons already provided, any lessons due to take place within 24 hours, and any other amount permitted by law for services already supplied or committed.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any statutory consumer rights that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.
15. Student protection and disputes
If a complaint or dispute arises between you and your teacher before a lesson has been completed, you agree to make reasonable efforts to resolve the issue directly with the teacher first.
If you cannot resolve the issue directly with the teacher, or if the lesson has been completed and you have rated the teacher’s services 2 or lower, you may ask Langu to review the matter.
You must raise any complaint or dispute as soon as possible and, where possible, before the lesson fee has been released to the teacher.
You acknowledge and agree that we may make a final decision, acting reasonably and in our discretion, about the complaint or dispute. Our decision may result in:
- a full or partial refund to you;
- a full or partial release of the lesson fee to the teacher;
- site credit being issued;
- a lesson being rescheduled; or
- another outcome we consider fair in the circumstances.
We may review lesson records, booking history, payment information, messages, attendance data, technical logs and other relevant platform information when investigating a dispute.
Where a teacher is unavailable or does not provide reasonable possible dates for lessons to take place, Langu may decide, in its discretion, whether a refund or site credit should be issued. In practice, we will usually take the student’s circumstances into account when making this decision.
16. Gift vouchers and site credit
Gift voucher purchases are non-refundable, except where required by law.
Gift vouchers expire 12 months after the date of purchase.
Any Langu site credits issued to students must be used within 12 months, after which they will expire.
Site credit has no cash value and cannot be transferred, sold or exchanged for cash unless required by law.
17. Communications with teachers
All communications between you and your teacher must take place through Langu.
You must not attempt to contact, arrange lessons with, pay, or be paid by a teacher outside Langu.
If a teacher attempts to contact you outside Langu, arrange lessons outside Langu, or request payment outside Langu, you must notify us immediately.
This rule is important for student protection, teacher protection, payment security, dispute handling, safeguarding, platform integrity and fraud prevention.
If you breach this rule, we may suspend or terminate your account and you may lose access to student protection.
18. Message monitoring, safety and AI tools
Messages sent through Langu are not private as between you and Langu.
We may access, review and monitor messages and related platform activity for purposes including:
- providing and improving the platform;
- supporting students and teachers;
- investigating complaints or disputes;
- preventing spam, scams, fraud or abuse;
- enforcing these terms;
- safeguarding users;
- detecting inappropriate, unlawful or harmful behaviour; and
- maintaining platform quality and integrity.
We may use automated systems, including AI-based tools, to help detect spam, scams, inappropriate content, abusive behaviour, safeguarding concerns or other misuse of the platform.
Automated tools may flag, block, delay or escalate messages for review. We may make final decisions manually or with the support of automated systems.
19. Behaviour standards
You must behave respectfully, appropriately and professionally when using Langu and when communicating with teachers, students, parents, guardians or Langu staff.
You must not:
- harass, threaten, abuse or intimidate anyone;
- send sexually inappropriate, discriminatory, hateful or offensive messages;
- request inappropriate lessons or interactions;
- send spam, scams or misleading messages;
- misuse teacher contact details or personal information;
- attempt to manipulate reviews, ratings or disputes;
- behave in a way that creates safeguarding concerns; or
- use Langu for any unlawful purpose.
Any breach of this section may result in immediate suspension or termination of your account without refund, except where a refund is required by law.
20. Lesson recordings
Langu does not currently provide a facility for recording lessons.
You must not record, screenshot, stream, publish or otherwise capture any lesson, teacher, student or lesson content without the prior consent of all participants and without complying with applicable law.
Where the student is under 18, recording is not permitted unless the parent or legal guardian has given express consent and the teacher has also agreed.
21. Company-sponsored students
Some students may access Langu through an employer, school, organisation or other sponsoring company.
If your lessons are paid for, arranged or sponsored by a company or organisation, additional terms may apply between Langu and that company or organisation.
Where there is a conflict between these Student Terms and a separate written agreement between Langu and the sponsoring company or organisation, the separate written agreement may take priority to the extent of that conflict.
This may affect payment, cancellation, refund, reporting, access, eligibility, lesson expiry, data sharing or other arrangements connected with sponsored lessons.
Where lessons are company-sponsored, we may share relevant attendance, usage, booking, progress, administrative and account information with the sponsoring company or organisation, subject to our Privacy Policy and applicable law.
22. Reviews and ratings
You may be invited to leave ratings, reviews or feedback after lessons. Your reviews must be honest, fair and based on your genuine experience.
We may remove, moderate or decline to publish reviews that we consider abusive, misleading, unlawful, irrelevant, fake, retaliatory, discriminatory or otherwise inappropriate.
You must not use reviews or ratings to threaten teachers, obtain improper refunds, manipulate outcomes or abuse the platform.
23. Suspension & termination
We may suspend, restrict or terminate your account immediately if:
- you breach these terms;
- we reasonably believe your account is being misused;
- your behaviour creates risk for teachers, students, Langu or the platform;
- you attempt to move lessons or payments off-platform;
- you send abusive, fraudulent, inappropriate or harmful messages;
- you fail to pay amounts due;
- we are required to do so by law, a payment provider or another authority; or
- continued access would, in our reasonable opinion, harm Langu or its users.
You may delete your account at any time from within your dashboard, where this feature is available, or by contacting us.
Account deletion does not affect rights or obligations that arose before deletion, including payment obligations, dispute processes, refund rules, misuse investigations or legal obligations.
24. Availability and changes to Langu
We aim to provide a reliable and useful platform, but we do not guarantee that Langu will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free or compatible with every device, browser or system.
We may update, change, suspend or remove parts of Langu from time to time.
We are not liable for loss of access, loss of data, interrupted lessons or platform issues caused by events outside our reasonable control, including internet failures, third-party service failures, payment provider issues, hosting outages, browser changes, security incidents, maintenance, legal requirements or force majeure events.
25. Liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so.
Subject to that, Langu is not liable for:
- the quality, suitability or outcome of lessons provided by independent teachers;
- your choice of teacher;
- technical issues caused by your equipment, software or internet connection;
- losses caused by your breach of these terms;
- indirect or consequential losses;
- loss of profits, business, goodwill, opportunity or data;
- arrangements made outside Langu; or
- conduct of teachers or students outside the platform.
Where we are liable to you, our total liability will be limited to the amount you paid through Langu for the lesson or package giving rise to the claim, unless a higher amount is required by law.
26. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold Langu harmless against claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs and expenses arising from:
- your misuse of Langu;
- your breach of these terms;
- your unlawful conduct;
- your off-platform arrangements with teachers;
- your infringement of another person’s rights; or
- your use of Langu on behalf of a minor.
This indemnity does not apply to the extent that the claim arises from our own breach of these terms or our own unlawful conduct.
27. Privacy and data protection
We process personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
By using Langu, you acknowledge that we may process personal data for purposes including account management, lesson booking, payment processing, teacher-student communication, dispute handling, fraud prevention, safeguarding, platform improvement, legal compliance and enforcement of these terms.
Where lessons are company-sponsored, we may share relevant usage, attendance, progress or administrative information with the sponsoring company or organisation, subject to our Privacy Policy and applicable law.
28. Changes to these terms
We may update these Student Terms from time to time.
The updated terms will apply from the date they are published or otherwise notified to you.
If we make material changes, we may notify you by email, dashboard notice or another reasonable method.
Your continued use of Langu after the updated terms take effect means you accept the updated terms. If you do not agree to the updated terms, you should stop using Langu.
29. Waiver and severability
If we do not enforce a right under these terms, this does not mean we have waived that right or that we cannot enforce it later. If any part of these terms is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, that part will be treated as modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid, lawful and enforceable. The rest of the terms will continue in effect.
30. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Student Terms are governed by English law. Any dispute arising in connection with Langu or these Student Terms will be subject to the jurisdiction of the English courts, except where applicable consumer law gives you the right to bring proceedings elsewhere.
